The gentleman was a lot of fun,with great performances and was visually interesting but for me a missed opportunity lets talk about why this is.
first of all i have to talk about the incredible cast and the amount of likeable characters. The cast was very impressive with big names perfect for each of their roles. And most of the characters were incredibly liekable. As none of them gave a damn about anyone else which just made them instantly charecters you could get behind. And there was so many campy over the top performances that just worked well for the film.
What i also liked was that all the characters got equal screen time. They managed to find a way where each of the characters got equal time for development and to show of there personalities. So you could form some form of connection to there characters which was fun to watch.
However my first negative would be that the films plot wasn't original enough. This sort of thing has been done before, with the whole drug dealer wanting to sell his business and people wanting to stop them is something we have seen before. I couldn't help but feel they could of been more creative and had more of a plot that separates itself from previous films like this but unfortunately it didn't.
Next i thought that the films script was very clever and its visuals were great. The film's script was excellent at making you play along with the plot of the movie. As the dynamic of splitting the screen time between past and present with Hugh Grant and Charlie Hunman worked well. But also they did some interesting things with the visuals. Including making the frame look like an old camera from the early 20th century, and the cinematography and set pieces were colourful, interesting and led to some great action sequences and uses of props.
Next the film was very funny. All the characters said some hilarious things that you weren't expecting to come out of there mouths. The film definitely went for shock factor with the humour which largely worked as something different. But i do have to say the film overstepped the line with some of its humour. I just thought that they overstepped the line with the constant use of the c word especially involving a scene with black actor Bugzy Malone. The humour involving a pig was just slightly to controversial as well, it all just depends on how much of the crudeness and shock factor you can take.
Now my final positive would be the excellent stand out performance from Hugh Grant. Wow what a different role for him, but he made it work and i was left pleasantly surprised. His very campy and humorous performance was a breath of fresh air and fantastic to watch every time he was on screen. And his character was delightfully sneaky making you have a good blend of liking and disliking his character.
Now my final two negatives that for me held back the movie from being great and made it more disappointing for me. It had a very over complicated plot and the ending was sadly poorly executed. The film was just narratively weak sadly, they had way to many subplots and randomly thrown in moments that it just didn't work and it becomes to difficult to keep up with even for the most clever of audience members. So despite it being less then 2 hours it felt longer and the narrative lacked a clear focus. And the ending was sadly very bad. It kept on stopping and starting, what i mean by that is it felt like the film had about 4 different endings. Also it felt like they couldn't decide how to end it so they just stuffed all 4 in to lazily set up a sequel so this was a shame.
Overall despite good performances, visuals creativity and great humour the film falls flat with its lack of creative plot and its narrative weaknesses that makes the film overall disappointing.
